Let America Be America Again

by Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

  1. Too bad Hughes hated America so much he sided with Stalin’s purges. Envy breeds contempt. Yes, America has her faults – but she always has been the land of the free and home of the brave.

Only someone blind with hatred, which you rightly condemn, could side with Stalin.

Bad choice of poems if your goal is to truly unite.

  2. The poem is meant to stand on its own and was written at a time when brutal savagery against blacks and others, such as Italians, was common place and workers were trying desperately to get proper wages and rights at work (though I guess they should have just gotten other jobs).

I’m sure Hughes made his choice because of the bleakness before him. With children working side by side with adults and business owners treating their workers as slaves who wouldn’t feel oppressed? Is that America to you? Can’t we appreciate the struggle of those movements which, yes, did have much basis in communistic ideals. That’s what it took to get us to where we are today – though there’s so much more we need to do.

If it’s inappropriate because of his communist ideals then so be it. It’s simply a poem that reminds us that we’re not equal simply because we have the constitution. In fact the ideas in that document have yet to truly be in practice by our government. It’s up to us to demand our rights and our freedoms. It’s up to us to practice humility and compassion towards one another.
