As it was commonly held in the past, and still is by some today, it is the white man’s burden to conquer all the heathen countries. This certainly effective in the territories of the United States of American as the “heathens” were conquered and relegated to small portions of land so they may continue their ghastly culture. (This burden is chronicled in Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The White Man’s Burden.”
Sadly, still today though many claim they are not racist or prejudice against others they certainly practice, in their lives and in speeches, the very opposite of this claim. These are the anti-immigrant groups today fighting Hispanics by way of “illegal” immigration rants. They state certain people are all “rapists and murders” even failing to remove women and children from their massive attack. And it is in their hearts and minds that these Hispanics, as it is certainly about Hispanics, are dirty, loud, and crude people. Their term of endearment, for these people’s countries that once had a more social-political meaning, but has been turned into a slight is “third world country.”
It is clearly written on the banners they wave so proudly: “Third world immigrants make third world countries.” What’s odd is these anti-immigrant groups actually understand that racism and prejudice are not traits widely appreciated by society; therefore, they say “we’re not racists,” but their actions prove otherwise. Furthermore you can hear it in their speeches, especially from those that fail to prepare any real speech. They go up on stage and get really sparked by their minimal audiences at which time they take the “it’s just us approach.” Thankfully, though, they also, like common criminals who want to witness their own crime, like to video tape these events and place them on You Tube.
Well for these anti-immigrants who are afraid American will become a “third world country” let me remind them that this was once a “third world country” before we slaughtered its inhabitants. This same event took place to the south of us where magnificent cultures rich in math and science were slaughtered. But, why be humbled by this? Why decide to love rather than hate? Why don’t we hear more stories about soldiers helping Iraqi civilians and less about covert government sponsored groups killing them? Finally, why can’t these anti-immigrant “patriot” groups see that they are also preaching hate, terror, and general negativity?
With that, here are some quotes from the Letter of Columbus to Luis De Sant Angel Announcing His Discovery.
1493 As I know you will be rejoiced at the glorious success that our Lord has given me in my voyage, I write this to tell you how in thirty-three days I sailed to the Indies with the fleet that the illustrious King and Queen, our Sovereigns, gave me, where I discovered a great many islands, inhabited by numberless people; and of all I have taken possession for their Highnesses by proclamation and display of the Royal Standard without opposition. To the first island I discovered I gave the name of San Salvador, in commemoration of His Divine Majesty, who has wonderfully granted all this. The Indians call it Guanaham. The second I named the Island of Santa Maria de Concepcion; the third, Fernandina; the fourth, Isabella; the fifth, Juana; and thus to each one I gave a new name.
They have no iron, nor steel, nor weapons, nor are they fit for them, because although they are well-made men of commanding stature, they appear extraordinarily timid. The only arms they have are sticks of cane, cut when in seed, with a sharpened stick at the end, and they are afraid to use these. Often I have sent two or three men ashore to some town to converse with them, and the natives came out in great numbers, and as soon as they saw our men arrive, fled without a moment’s delay although I protected them from all injury.
I have taken possession of all these islands, for their Highnesses, and all may be more extensive than I know, or can say, and I hold them for their Highnesses, who can command them as absolutely as the kingdoms of Castile.
I am so friendly with the king of that country that he was proud to call me his brother and hold me as such. Even should he change his mind and wish to quarrel with my men, neither he nor his subjects know what arms are, nor wear clothes, as I have said. They are the most timid people in the world, so that only the men remaining there could destroy the whole region, and run no risk if they know how to behave themselves properly.
