The illegal immigration issue spills over into the issue of legal immigration. Many advocates of anti-illegal immigrant measure are also following the platform of Numbers USA, which seeks to reduce immigration altogether under the premise that we cannot “save the world.”

This year’s immigration debates have been particularly heated. As a country, we’re still at a loss as to what to do with the 12 million illegal immigrants and their children, who in some cases were born here, or at the very least have been raised and educated as Americans. We’re puzzled, though, by the treatment of legal immigrants — those who have filled every form, paid every fee and jumped through every hoop only to be left hanging.

Such is the state of affairs with the immigrants brought to our attention in a story in Tuesday’s P-I. Those people — some of whom have been living here for years — are among the victims of our clunky-yet–cranked-up post-9/11 immigration system, a mechanism hindered by “security concerns.”
