I’d have to imagine that stories like this get the anti-immigrant crowd up in a roar. Just last week many anti-illegal immigrants were protesting against Vicente Fox in Wilkes-Barre declaring that Vicente Fox did not have the right to be here and that all that attended his speech were traitors.

Why, a recent letter writer asked, couldn’t Hispanics “settle for a few hours of radio time a week, as do the Polish, Italians, Celts, etc.,” implying that the region’s newest immigrants had somehow coerced the owners of WNAK into broadcasting exclusively in Spanish.

This is not the first time Americans have argued about whether immigration – legal or illegal – is good for the country. Meanwhile, below all the chatter there’s a lot of work getting done by people who are following in well-trod footsteps and who are contributing to society even as they influence it. That’s nothing new; everything from our cuisine to the vocabulary has been affected by the culture newcomers brought with them.
