Judging by the media questions at the Democratic and Republican presidential debates, immigration has replaced Iraq, health care, and the economy as the nation’s top issue. Forget about the billions of dollars being squandered in Iraq, or the 40 million Americans lacking health coverage—the media wants candidates to announce whether undocumented immigrants should get drivers licenses, or, at the December 4 Democratic debate, whether they would turn in an undocumented immigrant to the authorities. Why the shift in media focus to immigration?
For Lou Dobbs, the presence of undocumented immigrants in the United States is the only real issue worth talking about. Dobbs likes nothing more than to blame all of the nation’s problems—lack of health care, inadequate affordable housing, declining living standards, the income gap, etc.—on undocumented immigrants.
