2007 was a depressing year for migrants and their allies, and throughout the course of the year, anti-migrant rhetoric was strengthened and enshrined in the national media as well as the political sphere, new laws aimed at alienating migrants proliferated, and national legislation aimed at reform failed. The next year also seems to hold few prospects–an election year, most pro-migrant activists, myself included, expect only more talk and little action, at least on the national level. Still, we’ve learned something from our mistakes, and I think we’ll enter 2008 with a fiercer resolve and a realization that our still small voices will not quiet the anti-migrant banshees–we need to be loud.
