You don’t have to be Dr. Phil to know that these raids are traumatizing children and yet the stories barely make Page 1 of the newspapers.
It seems that San Rafael’s problems as a result of last years raids where just meat for ICE who decided to see what further damage they could do this week. Raids are a no-win, no-solution, callous and horrible tactic in response to an issue that is less about borders and more about humanity.

There are many problems facing the United States today: a faltering economy, a health-care crisis, and the continuing war in Iraq, to name a few. But viewers of some of the most prominent cable news programs are presented a different reality, one in which one issue stands above all others: illegal immigration.
The Education and Labor Subcommittee on Workforce Protections held hearings this past week concerning “ICE Workplace Raids: Their Impact on U.S. Children, Families, and Communities.” Witnesses explored how immigration enforcement could be improved in order to protect children, most of whom are American citizens.

A new lawsuit filed against a private contractor who runs an immigrant child detention center claims nine teenagers were beaten and abused by employees who work for Cornell Companies. The company has been cited by immigration officials for safety problems in the past.

At a fundraiser in Florida Thursday night, Barack Obama accused anti-immigrant crusaders Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh of “ginning things up” to such an extent that there was a rise in hate crimes against Hispanics last year.

Last night Immigration Equality raised nearly $200,000 at the Safe Haven Awards, an annual event that recognizes leaders working on behalf of LGBT/HIV+ immigrants and their families. This year we honored performance-poet Staceyann Chin, blogger/writer Andrew Sullivan, and standout pro bono partner Skadden. The program was standing-room only!
